Walking in UK National Parks 2011

Road in the UK lake district with the word SLOW written on it.

The Lake District National Park in England, a beautiful area for walking.

Stride out into one the UK’s National Parks during National Park Week.

From 25 to 31 July 2011 you can celebrate some of the best scenery, rarest wildlife and richest cultural heritage in the British Isles by participating in a wide variety of events.

Things to do

From tree planting (Cairngorms) to archery (Lake District, North York Moors), and from canoeing (Lake District) to deer-watching (Exmoor), it’s all happening this week! But of course our favourite activity is walking, and there are also many organised walks where you can learn more about an area’s history and wildlife from enthusiastic guides. Visit the National Parks website for more information about what is happening where.

Campaign for National Parks

Also this month the Campaign for National Parks, the UK charity dedicated to the protection of the UK’s National Parks, is celebrating its birthday. Their aim is to protect the finest landscapes in the country for everyone to enjoy. Their work started 75 years ago, when a group of individuals and voluntary organisations started a campaign to establish and protect National Parks in Britain. One of their recent successes was the protection of the South Downs as a new National Park.
