Strandja is Bulgaria’s largest and most varied nature park, located along the Black Sea.

This 8 day walking holiday to Strandja will take you on a journey, following one of Europe’s most natural rivers, from its source to the sea.

Along the way you will walk through dramatic karst landscapes, age-old woodlands, quiet rural villages, lush river valleys and beautiful coastal landscapes.

Strandja is a large and varied nature park, therefore car rental is included in the price of this holiday so you can travel around easily and stay in different parts of the area. You will spend time exploring from a single guesthouse or hotel, moving on to the next accommodation every few days.

There is a wide choice of accommodation for your holiday in Strandja, ranging from basic rooms, to cosy B&Bs, to small, privately owned hotels. Most accommodations have two or three stars and almost all have en-suite bathroom.

If you prefer some extra luxury, you can stay in small hotels with facilities like swimming pool, sauna, jacuzzi or fitness room. It all depends on your preferences and wishes.

Strandja’s friendly rolling hills offer relaxed walking in a wide variety of landscape types.

The network of paths that once connected the Strandja villages will now lead you to beautiful scenery and panoramas. Along the way you will be amazed by Strandja’s abundant flora & fauna. Many bird species that are now rare in Western Europe are still common here, and the meadows and pastures are full of wildflowers and butterflies. Sometimes you will feel like you are walking through a living rural museum.

Strandja walking holiday itinerary

This example 10 day itinerary is completely flexible and will be tailored to your interest and wishes. Your walking holiday can be shorter or longer, and can start any day, depending on your flight plan.

Day 1 – Travel to Bulgaria

Day 2 – Walk through open landscape with view to Turkey. Lunch in architectural reserve village. Walk around village. Visit house museum, chapels, and springs.

Day 3 – Woodland walk to the source of Mladezhko River, and the remains of fortress. Visit to rebel’s meeting place Petrova Niva from where there are beautiful views over the Strandja mountains.

Day 4 – Walking around one of the oldest villages in Strandja Nature Park; roundwalk to the meeting place of 3 main rivers in Strandja.

Day 5 – Guided excursion with local bee-keeper, tasting Strandja honey, 300 year old Strandja houses. Forest walk in “living museum”.

Day 6 – Beautiful roundwalk following river Veleka. Highlights: small waterfall, several springs, small chapel in the forest with religious icons and resting place.

Day 7– Bulgarian Black Sea coast. Walk over beautiful coast path, past quiet beaches and volcanic rock cliffs to coastal nature reserve.

Day 8 – Walk around Veleka estuary and Strandja coast.

Day 9 – Visit to Ropotamo nature reserve. Walk to beautiful bay and “Bulgarian Stonehenge”. Drive to the ancient coastal town of Sozopol to stroll through the old centre followed by dinner in one of the many restaurants.

Day 10 – Travel back home.
