Enjoy excellent snowshoeing in beautiful location in the French and Spanish Pyrenees.

During this holiday you will cross amazing snow-covered mountain trails with no-one else in sight and enjoy spectacular mountain-top views rarely seen in winter.

The area where this snowshoeing holiday takes place is known for its high percentage of clear, sunny days and low to moderate wind speeds. The snowshoeing days are planned for walking across all types of snow at normal walking pace over both rolling hills and high mountain peaks with spectacular views.

As your base for this snowshoeing holiday is an ancient spa town, it is possible to relax in a thermal bath after a great day in the mountains.

Accommodation in the Pyrénées

Accommodation will be in en-suite double rooms in a comfortable B&B or hotel in Ax les Thermes and Vielha. Both are lively spa towns with many good bars and restaurants, and of course thermal baths which are a great place to relax after a day in the mountains. Both are also excellent locations for snowshoeing in the surrounding mountains.

It's not necessary to have the fitness level of a mountaineer to snowshoe but you do need a good level of fitness that includes being able to walk comfortably for up to 4 to 5 hours at a steady pace. Ascents and descents are comparable to walking in any rolling mountainous terrain.

Snowshoes, poles and transceivers will be provided. For clothing bring a good layering system as it can get very warm, but equally quite cold. Essential to your normal walking clothing are: warm hat, gloves, waterproof jacket, waterproof trousers, fleece, sunglasses, sunscreen, water bottle (1 litre minimum), 3-season walking boots, 35-50 litre rucksack with the ability to attach snowshoes to the outside. Optional, but recommended, are: hot water flask, gaters.

Below is the typical programme for the Ax-le-Thermes snowshoeing holiday. Please contact the holiday provider for an example itinerary for the snowshoeing holiday in Vielha. Hut to hut snowshoeing holidays and week long snowshoeing holidays are also offered. Please also see the dates and availability section. The holiday provider can of course provide you with more information on the various options, so please do not hesitate to contact them.

Day 1 - Arrival day- pick up from Toulouse airport or train station and settling in your accommodation.

Day 2 - A drive to the Col de Chioula which offers many kilometres of safe snowshoeing - with the added incentive of two great cafe's on the piste. The trails provide great views of the mountains bordering Andorra and a perfect introduction to this area. You'll snowshoe through rolling forests and open ridges.

Day 3 - You'll start at the Plateau de Beille, at 1800m, (and a stage finish of the Tour de France on many occasions) where there will be many trail options. You will have close-up views of mountains reaching over 3000m and walk along rolling terrain through conifer woodland and open ridges, again safe snowshoeing territory away from downhill skifields.

Day 4 - For a more challenging day, you'll start at 2000m on the Col de Puymorens, following a wide valley amongst amazing mountain landscape. The objective is the peak of Tossa Rodona 2597m. This is a stunning wilderness walk.

Day 5 - Departure after breakfast, transfer to Toulouse.

The programme is designed to provide the most varied, challenging, but enjoyable days out in the mountains. However, weather and snow conditions may necessitate a change to the order of the programme. Safety is your host's primary concern so sometimes other routes may be used which are equally enjoyable, but more suited to the prevailing conditions.
