Walk along some of the Italian Rivieras' most unspoilt and often unknown stretches of coast during this walking holiday in Italy that offers both guided and self-guided options.

This itinerary offers a magical combination of Mediterranean seascapes and hills and mountain walking. You will see seaside towns and small fishing villages, and visit Portofino National Park and the Ligurian Alps.

During this walking holiday you will move to a second accommodation half-way through your holiday to give you access to the widest variety of walks and sightseeing trips.

Accommodation on the Italian Riviera Coast

You will stay in two Italian Riviera seaside resorts, Arenzano and Sestri Levante. In both resorts your accommodation will be 3-star hotels close to the sea front. All double rooms have en-suite facilities.

Walking along the Italian Riviera Coast

Each day's itinerary will start and finish at your hotel. Some of the itineraries require you just put on your boots and walk straight out of the hotel door, others start with a stroll to the nearby railway station (never more than a 10 minute walk from your hotel) and a short trip along the Riviera coast by train. The walks take you to areas of outstanding natural beauty, from where you can follow the coastal and mountain trails using the detailed route guides supplied. On most days there is a choice of several self-guided itineries with different length and grade, ideal for those who'd like to better explore the Ponente and Levante Riviera coastal hills, alps and towns along the way. On day 3, a guided walk, where you will explore the higher mountains, is also included. It is possible to include more guided walks in this holiday at additional cost. Italian Riviera Coast walking holiday itinerary

This self-guided walking holiday in Italy offers a variety of walks to choose from each day;

Day 1 - Transfer day, to the Ponente Riviera. For those flying to Genoa: airport transfer by car to hotel in your resort village (0h20). For those flying to Pisa: Arrive before 3:30pm for a comfortable transfer from the airport to the resort village by train (2h45), walk to hotel (0h10). You'll be met at your hotel and receive your detailed daily itineraries. Enjoy your evening in one of the resorts' many restaurants.

Day 2 - The coastal trails of the 'Finalese'. Three itineraries from 3 to 9 hrs. These walks take you along some of Liguria's most beautiful and unspoilt coast. Ancient fortified towns, traditional fishing communities and villages with strong architectural influences from north Africa, are all easily accessible from the main coastal trail - Noli, Finale Ligure and Finalborgo. Plenty of time for taking time for lunch on the beach. Moderately paced and strenuous, full day walking itineraries. A walk along the Italian Riviera's most undeveloped coast - outstanding natural beauty.

Day 3 - Coastal mountain walking above the Gulf of Genova. Three guided itineraries from 5 to 9 hrs. Up and along the magnificent coastal alps overlooking the Gulf of Genova. Your English speaking guide will meet you at your hotel after breakfast. This walking itinerary takes you high above the village where you are staying to traverse the coastal mountain ridges down into the city limits of the regions capital, Genova. Or a day sightseeing the regional capital of Genova, with perhaps even a visit to it's impressive aquarium. Moderately paced and strenuous, full day walking itineraries. Perhaps one of the most impressive and varied coastal hikes in the northern Mediterranean.

Day 4 - The coastal path to Punta Manara. Two itineraries from 2 to 4 hrs. Leisurely transfer by train (1h35) after breakfast to your resort village on the Levante Riviera for the second part of your wakling holiday. Drop your luggage off at your hotel in Sestri Levante with time to explore the historic centre a little, prior to lunch. Circular walk: time in the afternoon for walking the coastal trail to Punta Manara, returning via the inland route above the olive groves. Leisurely and moderately paced, half day walking itineraries. A scenic walk with truly stunning coastal panoramas.

Day 5 - Grand traverse of the Portofino National Park. Three itineraries from 4 to 9 hrs. This walking itinerary starts in Camogli and takes you from one end of the Portofino National Park to the other, with time to stroll around Camogli, San Fruttuoso, Portofino and Santa Margherita along the way. Allow a full day with 6 hrs of walking to discover all the jewels of this magnificent coastal trail. Visiting some of the regions most famous and most remote coastal villages through rich mediterranean vegetation. Moderately paced and strenuous, full day walking itineraries. Fantastic walks through a simply idyllic corner of the Italian Riviera.

Day 6 - The 'classic' coastal walk of the Cinque Terre. Three itineraries from 4 to 9 hrs. Walking itinerary along the beautiful Cinque Terre coast, passing through the unique and characteristic villages of Monterosso, Vernazza Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. This trail takes you along a coastal stretch that is recognised as one of the great walks of the world. An experience to remember forever and surely one that everyone with a passion for walking should enjoy at least once in their lives. Moderately paced, full day walking itineraries.

Day 7 - Transfer day, from the Levante Riviera. For those flying from Genoa: Walk to railway station (0h10), train to Genova (1h00), bus to the airport (0h20). For those flying from Pisa: Walk to the railway station (0h10), train to Pisa airport (2h00). Try and arrange flights to depart no earlier than mid-afternoon to avoid an early start before breakfast. For those driving: Depart at leisure.

This walking holiday is available all year and can start on any day, subject to accommodation availability. The walking holiday company also organises this holiday as a guided tour during the 2nd week of May and the first week of October at a small additional cost. For small groups this guided walking holiday can also be organised at different dates. It is also possible to add more guided walking days to the self-guided itinerary at additional cost.
