Each day's walk of this self-guided walking holiday has a different feel and differing landscapes and makes for wonderful memories of beautiful Scotland.

The Kintyre Way starts at the narrow isthmus of Tarbert where, according to Norse sagas, King Magnus Barefoot claimed Kintyre as an island by having his boat dragged across the land between the east and west lochs. From there the route zigzags across the peninsula in 87 fascinating miles.

Highlights of this walking holiday include criss-crossing Scotland's main peninsula, great views of coasts and hills, sampling the local produce and otter spotting.

During this walking holiday you walk a trail from one accommodation to the next. You stay in carefully selected guest houses and Bed & Breakfast establishments which all meet the VisitScotland standard. The guesthouses where you're staying are normally full-time businesses and have more than 3 bedrooms. Bed & Breakfast establishments are often local family homes and have 3 or less bedrooms. Ensuite facilities are not always available but will be used where possible. Breakfast is included throughout your stay at this Scottisch walking holiday.

Walking the Kintyre way

This self-guided walking holiday is suitable for fit novices, or anyone with a reasonably active lifestyle. You'll be walking over undulating terrain with some off path rough walking. Daily distances is between 8 and 12 miles (13-20 kilometres), with one or two ascents of up to 1500 ft (450 m). You'll typically be walking for 5-7 hours plus stops.

Kintyre Way walking holiday itinerary

The itinerary for this self-guided walking holiday to Scotland is as follows:

Day 1 - Start of your walking holiday. Walk southwards round the harbour to and up to Tarbert Castle. From the castle you cross the hillside to Skipness and Claonaig - about 18km / 11 miles.

Day 2 - Going back to Claonaig to walk cross country over a moorland path to Clachan - about 16km/10 miles.

Day 3 - Today you follow the coastline and beach to walk to Tayinloan about 14km/9 miles.

Day 4 - Another cross country day heading across the peninsula to Carradale - about 26km/16 miles of walking.

Day 5 - Walking to Campbeltown via Saddell and Lussa Loch - about 21km/12.5 miles. (Transfer to Campbeltown)

Day 6 - Transfer back to Lussa Loch for an easier day to walk from Lussa Loch to the fine beach and some paddling at Machrichanish, about 19km/11 miles.

Day 7 - Last walking day. Walk from Machrichanish to Dunaverty 26km/15.5mls. Final night in Southend or Campbeltown.

Day 8 - End of this self-guided walking holiday. Onward travel.

Glasgow airport is the nearest airport to the starting point of this walking holiday. Busses depart from Buchanan Street Bus station near the centre of Glasgow to Tarbert several times a day. Journey time is about 3 hours. Return to Glasgow from Cambeltown is by the same bus.
