walkers enjoying the Pembrokeshire coastal trails

Learn to Nordic walk along the beaches, coves and cliffs of the magnificent Pembrokeshire Coastal path, with renowned storyteller and guide Andrew Dugmore.

Walking is wonderful, walking with Nordic poles is something else. Cuffern Manor offers Nordic walking holidays for beginners (poles can be supplied) and for experienced walkers. And what’s more they can show you the stunning Pembrokeshire Coast National Park at the same time.

What is Nordic Walking?

Nordic Walking originates in Finland. The innovation stems from the poles themselves, which are different from standard trekking poles. Nordic Walking poles are made of a mix of carbon and glass fibres which gives them shock-absorbent properties. They are very tough, reliable and of minimal weight. Also new is a wrist strap, which will allow the walker to release his/her grip and return the pole automatically to the palm of the hand. Starting with a totally natural movement which is walking, all that was required was to add two little poles to create a new popular and global sport. Nordic Walking is now recommended by many doctors.

  • It strengthens breathing capacity and heart function
  • It relieves knees and back strain (unlike jogging)
  • It uses 80% of your body muscles
  • It expends twice the amount of calories than walking or jogging
  • Due to improved oxygenation, the brain enjoys a healthier flow of blood which increases brain capacity

A sport to lose weight, twice as effective as jogging and far less dangerous for your knees and back! With the support of the poles it is ideal for people suffering with joint problems or obesity as the body weight is distributed between our four limbs (arms and legs) rather than just the legs and the support given by the poles also provide extra balance. Did you know…1 hour of Nordic Walking will burn around 350 to 400 kcal, where as jogging will only burn between 155 to 200!

Your Nordic walking tuition will provide you with comprehensive training which will include uphill and downhill techniques and walking along different terrains.
Each day after the initial training period we will follow a 3 or 4 mile guided walk along sections of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, led by our experienced Nordic walking instructor and tour guide. Hear tales of Celtic saints and ancient stones while walking along the inspirational landscape of Pembrokeshire.
For reference and further information there is an article about nordic walking in October’s 2012 copy of Coast magazine, which recommends Pembrokeshire as a particularly suitable area.

On the first evening you’ll be greeted by your guide for the weekend who will then share with you “tales of the Celts” told in the authentic tradition of the storyteller.
This Nordic walking holiday is suitable for beginners and those who have a little experience. The holiday is subject to a minimum number of participants.
