During this self-guided walking holiday you'll explore the heart of the Salzkammergut area, also known as Austria's lake district, a favourite walking area in Austria.

Situated on the Eastern extremities of the Alps, the Dachstein Mountains dominate the skyline of the beautiful Salzkammergut region. There are many well-marked walking trails here, and interesting places to see such as the Dachstein glacier and ice caves, and the charming town of Halstatt.

During this walking holiday in Austria you stay in a family run hotel in a scenic lakeside town: Obertraun.

Accommodation in Salzkammergut

You'll explore the Salzkammergut area from the Obertrauner Hof, a small and comfy, family-run hotel with 12 light and airy bedrooms. The rooms are spacious and comfortably furnished; all have en-suite shower and WC. All bed linen and towels are provided and the rooms are cleaned daily. Many of the rooms have balconies with wide panoramic views of the Dachstein Mountains. There are communal areas on each landing with tea and coffee making facilities and TV.

A generous buffet breakfast gives the perfect start to the day, offering a selection of breads, meats, cheeses, fruit preserves, cereals, toast, coffee, tea and juice. Lunch can be bought in local bakeries, one is located directly opposite the Obertrauner hof.

There are several good restaurants all within walking distance of the Obertrauner Hof. In-house shared cooking facilities area also available for a small additional cost.

Car rental is not essential for this walking holiday, Obertraun is on the local rail network and most walks start immediately from Obertraun.

Your hosts can offer minibus transfers to and from Salzburg, as well as to walk starting points.

Walking in the Salzkammergut region

There are many walking opportunities in the direct vicinity of this part of Salzkammergut. You can get to additional walks through short train or bus journeys. Your hosts can for example provide walking notes for walks to the Echnertal, Gosausee, Ewige Wand, Hallstattersee, Koppental & Koppenwinkl, Heilbronner Kreuz and Schönbergalm to Daumelkogel.

There are also a few more challenging walks available, and if you like your hosts can organise a night at a mountain hut for you. At the start of your walking holiday, your hosts will sit down with you to discuss the possibilities and your walking preferences.

You'll receive a local walking map on which the trails are clearly marked. Cable cars give you the opportunity to ascend quickly into the mountains where you can explore a wide variety of trails and footpaths walking through alpine meadows and enjoying panoramic views.

Next to completely self-guided walking, it's also possible to go out walking with a local guide if you prefer. Guides are happy to share their local knowledge with you during a day of guided walking.

Salzkammergut walking holiday itinerary

This four day walking holiday itinerary is just an example, your programme of walks can be tailored to your interests and wishes. Day 1 - Early flight into Salzburg Airport in Austria. Travel to Obertraun at the heart of the Salzkammergut region. Spend the afternoon walking the banks of the peaceful Halstattersee Lake.

Day 2 - A day walking on the Krippenstein Mountain, which dominates the Obertraun skyline. Take a cable car to the top, rising over 1,500 metres from where the Five Fingers platform provides uninterrupted views across Lake Hallstattersee. You can choose from a variety of walking trails starting from the plateau. Enjoy walking in a most unusual landscape.

Day 3 - A short transfer to Gosau by bus from where you commence your walk. There are 2 options for today. You can either go walking around the stunning Gosausee Lake, dominated by the Dachstein Glacier, or take the cable-car up to the Zweiselalm. From here you can walk around the many trails amongst the meadows and cattle with their traditional bells. From high up there are stunning views to the Glacier and across the surrounding valleys.

Day 4 - A relaxing walk around the lake until it's time to depart to Salzburg Airport.

This self-guided walking holiday to the Salzkammergut region in Austria is completely flexible and can start on any day, to suit your travel plans. It is also possible to extend this walking holiday by adding days. The low-level walks are already beautiful from mid-April onwards, some of the high mountain walks are available from June.
