Winter Walking in Ramsau am Dachstein

  • 40 km of interconnected walking trails are located on the Ramsau plateau, and are 4 m wide.
  • Further 30 km of winter walking paths lead the hiker up to the Alpine pasture's region on a level of 1.700 m.

The wide walking trails are mainly flat and in open, sunny countryside. The only oncoming traffic you might encounter here are horse-draws sleighs. The narrow winter walking paths are mostly to be found at the edges of the woods, are ideal in the case of snowfall and sheltered in case of wind. There are some steep sections.

There are a total of 78 rustic mountain restaurants, cafes, huts and sunny terraces along the routes where you can stop for a drink or a bite to eat.

As an example of a few possible routes:

Panorama Trail:

The Pension Hoffelner is situated directly on the Panorama Walking Trail which is the longest trail in the area, linking many areas of Ramsau village on the plateau. This is a circular trail which takes you above the village with great views to the south and north to the base of the Dachstein Glacier road, then circling back through the village centre and on to Rössing where there a traditional clothing factory, specializing in local felt production which is interesting to visit, then back to the Hoffelner. 16.2 km circular route, of medium difficulty.

Türlwand Trail:

Starting from the centre of the village, which is easily reached by foot from the Hoffelner, this trail takes you through mountain pastures and forest gradually winding up to the base of the Dachstein Glacier cable car passing 3 mountain restaurants en-route. 6.6km each way, easy. From this point you could then take a trip on the cable car onto the Dachtsein Glacier at 2700 meters, to enjoy the magnificent views, visit the ice palace, walk across the “hanging bridge” and the “stairs to no-where”, as well as walk for 45 minutes along a prepared path to Dachtseinwarte for a bite to eat. There is also a restaurant at top station of the cable car.

There are 8 further marked routes in and around Ramsau village, varying from 2km to 10 km in length.

Snow-Shoe Walking

There are also several marked snow-shoe walking trails at the foot of the glacier, of 4 to 9 km in length. Snow shoes can be hired locally and guided tours for either a full or half day, including equipment can also be organised (charged locally).

For the adventurous it is also possible to cross the glacier on snow-shoes with a guide, this trek is graded as difficult, mainly because of the length and altitude. It is 25 km long, starts in Ramsau, ends in Obertraun, including a trip up on the Glacier cable car, a lunch stop and bus ride back to Ramsau.

It's also possible to organise guided snow-shoe walking treks, suitable for all levels of ability and experience, charged locally.
