Your base for this guided walking holiday in France is Les Angles. Your base sits at a height of 1,650 metres on the high Capcir plateau. Between soaring limestone and granite peaks rising to nearly 3,000 metres, this is a perfect base for a wide variety of walks. Walking can be tailored to all levels of fitness and interest. From easy walks to discover the fascinating local history to challenging ridge scrambles and summits, it's all possible in this part of the Pyrenees.

All guided walks are led by your host Mike. Mike is a qualified international mountain leader (IML) and is one of the most experienced leaders in Europe with over 40 years of walking and climbing throughout the world including the 1975 British Everest Expedition led by Chris Bonington.

Pyrenean trails walking holiday itinerary

The guided walking holiday itinerary below is an example. Your walking programme will be tailored to your wishes, interests and level of fitness.

Day 1 - Pyrenean Trails will meet you at either Perpignan, Girona or Barcelona airports and transfer you to your accommodation in Les Angles. After settling in, you can explore the old village of Les Angles or, to help your body acclimatise, take a short walk to Lac de Matermale before a welcoming aperitif.

Day 2 - From Les Angles you walk through forest trails to the Balcon de Balcere which leads past hidden lakes to a shepherd's hut. Here you can see transhumance in action in high pastures where over 400 cattle are looked after by modern day shepherds. Climbing through Scots Pine forests you gain your high point at the cross of Mont Llaret at 2,376 metres before descending the ski pistes back to Les Angles and a welcome beer.

Day 3 - A short drive across the valley takes you to Col de Sansa at 1,776 metres from where you start your ascent of Le Madres at 2,469 metres high. Walking over shepherd's trails you pass their rustic refuge and into the tranquil Coume de Ponteils. This beautiful valley is a natural haven for alpine plants and leads to Roc Negre. On a clear day you can gaze down on the Mediterranean Sea from here, before climbing the final few meters to the mountain's summit. Descending Serrat de L'Ours you complete the circuit of this wild mountain Pyrenean area.

Day 4 - A day to recover or take time to explore the region on your own. Lac de Matermale is a local activity centre with several water based activities next to the bar and restaurant. You can try horse riding, archery or wind your way through the wires on a ropes course high in the trees. Les Angles has a highly regarded Animal Park with several species of animal once seen roaming wild in the Pyrenees. If relaxation is what you are looking for then try one of the three thermal Spa baths.

Days 5 and 6 - On the next two days of walking, you'll have the opportunity to stay overnight in a mountain refuge. You'll be walking up Pic Carlit, which at 2,921 metres is the highest peak in the Eastern Pyrenees.

From Les Angles you follow walking tracks and streams to the source of the River Aude. This part of the Catalonian Pyrenees is a major watershed where, within a few miles, streams flow north towards the Atlantic Ocean, south to the Mediterranean Sea near Barcelona, east to the Mediterranean by Perpignan and northeast to the Mediterranean by Narbonne.

From Lac D'Aude, a short climb leads to stunning views of tomorrow's ascent. You walk down to Lac Bouillouses and the Club Alpine Française refuge for the night.

Starting early the next day, you walk the barrage wall and ascend through the Desert du Carlit, a wild glaciated area with dozens of natural lakes now stocked with wild mountain trout. Walking glacial moraine, the final towering summit looms overhead and the path takes an unlikely line across a rock face up to this majestic summit. A fitting finale to your walking week.

Day 7 - End of this guided walking holiday in the Catalonian Pyrenees in France. Airport transfer and departure.
