Several of the walks start directly from the doorstep of your accommodation, and many more are available in the countryside around. Your hosts will sit down with you to discuss the walking options, and give you walk descriptions and maps of the area. Natural wonders of the area include the striking pink and white almond blossom, orange blossom scent, abundant wild flowers and butterflies, eagles, bee-eaters, nightingales and much, much more. Two kilometres from the apartment, in this area called Pla de Petracos, there are ancient cave paintings said to have been painted over 5000 years ago. Caves at the archaeological site have a viewing platform, and the paintings are explained on six interpretive panels.

Marina Alta walking holiday example walks

These are a few example walks available during the Marina Alta self-guided walking holiday in Spain;

Walk 1 - Petracos/Tollos. A not too strenuous but lengthy circuit walk around the hills of Serra de Alfaro taking in the Malafi gorge and optionally Castells and Tollos villages.

Walk 2 - Cavall Vert. A walk over the Serra del Penyo with spectacular views of the Mediterranean coast and nearby mountain ranges. This walk can be made easier by driving up a quiet country lane to a col in the ridge or to the mountain village of Benimaurell.

Walk 3 - Serella Castle. There are several walks from Castells village which take in part or all of the Serrella massif and have incredible mountain and valley views including some notable natural rock arches. The "castle of castles" is built on a crag and stands 1000m high. The history and origins of the castle are vague. Now in ruins it is believed to have been built as a Muslim castle to withstand the Christian invasions. Parts of the walls and dungeons can still be seen.

Walk 4 - Bernia. Drive down the Jalon valley and up to Bernia to discover a 5 hour walk (part scramble) which takes in the 1,129 metre Bernia west summit and has some of the most amazing views in the region.
