Self Catering based on 2 persons sharing one bedroom apartment or cottage
Enjoy a week of self-guided or guided walking in Andalucia on this centre based holiday in Spain.
Come and explore Almeria Province, full of varied landscapes, and soak up life in a traditional Andalucian mountain village, too, enjoying great food, meeting friendly local people and staying in a beautiful finca. A centre based break is relaxing – no need to move between accommodation, packing and unpacking each time – and all the walks except one begin from right outside the finca and follow circular routes, so no need to use a bus or taxi at all.
You can enjoy walking here almost all year round, except in July and August when it’s too hot. You might experience Indian summer temperatures in October and November, and can walk in mild winter weather during December and January, which is also when the olive harvest takes place. See the almond blossom in February and discover great birdwatching and beautiful wildflowers from March to May.
Accommodation is a finca situated a five minute walk from Lubrin, and set within two acres of land. Lubrin is a very authentic village, full of white painted houses, dripping with geraniums and tucked into the foothills of the Sierras de los Filabres mountains. It’s a thriving place, with two supermarkets, three bakers, two butchers, an ATM, Post Office and weekly street market.
You’ll stay at the finca either self catering or on a B&B basis, so you have the freedom to choose where, when and what you eat. There are several tapas bars in Lubrin serving a great range of traditional and veggie Andalucian food, at very low prices.
There are two apartments within the original cortijo and three cottages converted from stables, all self catering and equipped with a kitchenette. There are wood burners, terraces and lovely views of the mountains from all the accommodation, and also free Wi-Fi, DVD players, books, DVDs and board games.
Walking in Almeria, which is particularly dry and sunny, is superb here between October and May. You can walk from your accommodation straight into almond groves and wooded valleys of the rugged and incredibly beautiful Sierras de los Filabres. Walks are moderate and no longer than 13km, and at the end of each walk you can end up in the local village of Lubrin for a beer, glass of local wine and delicious tapas. Magical!
Walks are lead by Paul and Sara, who live on the finca, and know all the walking trails and fascinating details of the local landscape. They enjoy sharing their local knowledge, and their love for Lubrin village itself, with its welcoming villagers.
Totally independent holiday with enjoyable walks right outside the front door and opportunities to experience the culture, history and gastronomy of southern Spain.
Self Guided Walks:
Introductory Walk – 6.3km (3.9mile) – Ascent 0m – 1 to 2 hours.
Four Moderate Walks – 12.4 to 13.9km ( 7.7 to 8.6miles) – Ascent 0, 200m and 250m – 3 to 4 hours.
Morning and/or evening walks combined with:
5 minute walk to the village to browse the shops and market (Wednesday only), people watch from the Plaza Bar on the main square or a memorable Tapas Crawl or enjoy a Menu del Dias for €10 (including wine) or try the local gastronomic offerings of Wild Boar and Partridge (seasonal) or Paella at one of the restaurants.
Visit, by car or local bus, the ancient Andalusian city of Almeria (1 hour away), sheltered at the base of a bay, proudly dominated by the amazing Alcazaba, a huge Moorish citadel with three walled enclosures dating from 995.
Trip to the “seaside” (45mins away) to enjoy strolls along the deserted beaches and romantic coves of the Costa del Almeria.
Spend a whole day walking in the Cabo de Gata in the Nijar National Park. The park is one of the most beautiful and ecologically rich coastal strips in the western Mediterranean and is the first natural land and sea park in Andalucia. The drive takes just over an hour and the route down the mountain, via Nijar, is very dramatic. The park offers walks on marked trails and tracks amongst native scrub and grasses, amidst the scent of wild lemon balm and the distinctive aromas of curry plant and herbs. You are able to follow inland trails and coastline.
Granada is just 2 hours away by car on the new Almeria to Sevilla motorway. It might prove difficult not to be seduced by the opportunity to visit the Alhambra, which stands out as the most famous example of Moorish architecture.
Day 1 - Meet up at Alicante Airport and leaving for Lubrin at midday or sooner with introductions on route. Arrive at Cortijo Fuente Arriba at about 2.30pm and settled into accommodation with a welcome pack of food and drink and perhaps a siesta to recover from the journey. At 7pm walk into village for an exploratory/explanation walk of Lubrin and it amenities.
Day 2 - WEST WALK: 13.31 km | round trip Total climb 392 metre | Total descent 388 metre
Commencing from straight outside the finca and entering the dry river bed of Rambla Marchallico for 2km of consistent shallow gradient formed, by millennia of occasional flowing water. Next is the 1 km main ascent in the form of several moderate gradients connected by hair pin bends. Atop the rise is a breathtaking view of the Mediterranean Sea before 3km ridge walking with ever changing scenery. The first descent takes us through a hamlet perched on the side of the mountain with abandoned Cortijos. Then along a valley floor with almond groves both sides creating a patchwork of different soil colours. Second descent is down through a small cluster of working Cortijos before reaching the main road back to Lubrin.
Day 3 - SOUTH WALK: 10.96 km | round trip Total climb 328 metre | Total descent 331 metre
From the finca we pass through the heart of Lubrin village before crossing the road into the La Alcarria valley of Olive and Almond groves interrupted by the traditional architecture of magnificent Cortijos. At the 3km marker we turn up the hillside for the main moderate ascent along a dirt road up to the water tank and an abandoned Cortijo. Then the track narrows and steepens for last moderate + climb to the ridge containing the communication masts of the area. Then a little over 2km of ridge walking with breathtaking views to the north and south before intersecting the El Chive to Lubrin road and descending the 328 metres back to a welcome drink in one of Lubrin’s bars.
Day 4 - Free Day or Daytrip to Granada, leaving at 8.00am to visit the Alambra and some free time in the historic city, eating, drinking and shopping. The travel cost will be 45 Euros per person and help will be given to book the Alhambra soon after reserving a place on the walking tour.
Day 5 - Market day in Lubrin, spending the morning browsing the street market. After lunch: CENTRAL WALK 6.56 km | round trip Total climb 173 metre | Total descent 168 metre
From the finca we walk to the village outdoor community centre, past the tennis courts, football pitch and swimming pool and then over a ridge before dropping down to the La Valera group of cortijos. From here we cross the main road onto the El Chive road before turning off, once more into La Alcarria valley. We take the “ring road” around La Alcarria before entering the main rambla to head back to Lubrin.
Day 6 - Today we will walk in the Cabo de Gata Natural Park, one the few remaining places on the Mediterranean coast that is free of exorbitant urbanism and mass tourism. Travel time is just over an hour from Lubrin and after our walk we will enjoy a picnic lunch and maybe a dip in the sea!
Day 7 - NORTH WALK 12.50 km | round trip Total climb 355 metre | Total descent 351 metre
From the finca we walk to Cortijo on the next hill just 1km away and continue on upwards through an Olive grove. We drop down into Rambla Borregas and after a short walk will intersect to old Lubrin to Rambla Honda road, now just a track. After just over 1km on the village road we intersect Rambla Sacristant where the old clothes washing facility has been preserved. There follows a steady 4 Km of walking the rambla with Cortijos now and again clinging to the hillsides. We will also pass the ruins of a Molino (Flour Mill) with its water tower still in place. After passing through a small gorge of interesting geology we turn up the hillside along a moderate winding track before reaching the ridge with views to the Mediterranean Sea. Next we descend into Rambla Marchallico for the 2 km walk home to Lubrin
